Der Film erzählt die Geschichte des Auftragskillers Ghost Dog, der für das Mafiamitglied Louie Mordaufträge erfüllt. Die beiden halten mithilfe von Brieftauben nur sporadisch Kontakt. Ghost Dog folgt dem „Weg des Samurai", dessen Grundsätze er aus einem Buch mit dem Titel Hagakure bezieht.
